Hello everyone! I posted about this a little earlier but I wanted to tell you a little more about my children’s picture book, “I Want a Kid and I Don’t Care.

I Want a Kid and I Don’t Care’ originated as a simple rhyme that bobbed around in my head for a good amount of time. It started when I was talking to a friend about adoption. I told them that I didn’t care what my future kid(s) looked like if I had any. I didn’t car if they had brown eyes, or red hair, if they were black, white, asian or anything. It just doesn’t matter to me. All I care is that they know that I love them no matter who they are. I learned that that wasn’t the case for many. Many are very particular about the kid they want and hold very confining standards for their looks and even personality. So I wrote a poem about how I felt and filed it away.

Then came a day where I decided that I was going to paint as many kids as possible and make each one as different as I could. They were a mix of acrylic paint, pen and ink, and digital edits here and there. I was happy with them. I filed those away as well.

The day of reckoning occurred when I happened upon a wall. It wasn’t just any wall, but a wall filled with pictures of children looking for homes. I believe it was an adoption organization. There were so many of them, ranging from infants to teens. It made me sad to think they didn’t have a forever home yet. And I thought about it and thought about it and thought about it for days on end. I wanted to adopt them all.

And that’s when the idea hit. I can’t adopt them all but I can make something. That is after all, the only thing I’m good at. The poem and the pictures. If I put them together I could tell a story, a story about every kid. Every kid ever that exists and how they deserve to be loved and cared for regardless of who they are or where they came from. And that’s what I did.

I worked on this book for well over a year making sure it was as perfect as possible. To include as much as I could in as little space as possible. With spreads that incorporate physical appearance to likes and desires, to gender and disabilities. I wanted them said in a way that was fun but at the same time touching. With a simple message of unconditional love.

With spreads like these:

And more, it incorporates all different types of kids and all types of differences and ends each with a message of love and acceptance.

But I need your help to make it happen. I’m a recent college graduate and I don’t have much money to my name. All I need is enough to get this book up on its feet and get it out to online distributors so that it’s available to parents and families and kids who need it most. With your help this can be made possible. I recently launched a KickStarter campaign that can be found here [I Want a Kid and I Don’t Care KickStarter], which you can support by making a pledge and getting a copy for yourself or a loved one! I’m not making any money from this campaign, it’s simply going back to printing costs and distribution, additionally any money made over what is needed will be donated to an adoption agency called MARE that inspired me to create the project.

If you don’t have the money to pledge please help by forwarding this post or sending the link to people who might be. Anyone from moms, dads, LGBTQ families, foster parents, guardians, educators, people in childcare. I just want to get it out there to those who need it.

Thank you!

“What was great about this is that the luxury of a love story was not where we were, I mean they can’t even talk to each other. We never even talked about it - it was never there, no one said ‘maybe’, we never had to fight against it. It was always going to be two warriors on par, starting off with very little respect for each other and ending up with a massive respect for each other.” - Charlize Theron (x)
