Because there’s always needless controversy about the use of refs, I thought I’d put these out there. I usually try to link to the references I use on dA and LJ, but they don’t always make it to my tumblr posts. THERE IS NOTHING BAD OR SHAMEFUL ABOUT USING PHOTO REFERENCES, OK? Life drawing from live models is fantastic if you have the means and opportunity, but most of us have to settle for a photograph and there’s absolutely no shame in that.

I’m reblogging for the lovely art but also for the FUCKING COMMENT FROM THE ARTIST: this trend of “real artists don’t use reference” needs to die like yesterday. There is no shame about using photo references or, if you can, live models.

And if some random opinion from fan artists aren’t enough for you (it should, fan artists are artists but, whatever…), here is a quote from Alex Ross' book, Mythology.

Ross’ biggest breakthrough as an illustrator came in June 1987 at the American Academy of Art, when he was introduced to the use of live models. “Before that, I had no idea how much I could grow as a draftsman. It was a huge turning point, because all through grade school I hadn’t so much as drawn from photographs_I’d always thought that you had to make it all up out of your head, and that’s how you did ‘fantasy’ illustration. Now I wonder if I would have developed even sooner had I drawn from life as child”

Of course, studying anatomy, body proportions, etc is important but it doesn’t mean that you can’t use reference photos or even that you aren’t a “real artist” because you do.
