Dear Mom and Dad,
This is what happiness looks like. Sorry you were so miserable in your own lives that you couldn’t allow me a chance at my own. I went out and found it anyway. I miss you, and will miss you even more this holiday season since you won’t allow me to come back home unless I have a woman on my arm. Oh by the way, we’ll still be using the family recipe for the stuffing, I’m sure it’ll be a hit with our friends.
Happy Holidays,
Your son, his boyfriend, and our spoiled cat
This made me cry a little.
I really love selfish characters. Three of my characters that I consider my… “main” ones I guess, are incredibly selfish and think of themselves first a lot of the time. Not because they’re terrible people, but because they simply consider their own wants and desires. And THAT is very VERY hard to do for a lot of people. I feel horrible horrible guilt whenever I take a selfish act, like, decline someones invitation to go somewhere because I want to stay home and play video games, or not buy someone a gift because don’t want to spend the money. Saying “no” is INCREDIBLY hard for me.
So I love selfish characters. Because my Cleo or Altra or Samantha can all say “no” without a shred of guilt because they put themselves first a lot of the time. That doesn’t mean they are poor characters. Cleo is fiercely loyal to her two closest friends and would fall head over heels for them. Altra protects her entire race. Samantha is a defender of UNIVERSES.
Character growth is a fine line. Cleo, Altra, and Samantha will never be selfless. It’s not in them to be. But maybe they consider the consequences of their actions a little more. I dunno. I do know, you want to consider what makes a character unique, what makes them so appealing to people. Keep THAT. Unless your goal is to make your audience dislike them. Then consider how you want your audience to view that character.
Hell, you want good characterization? Watch freakin’ My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I have never seen six characters so finely polished in their personality types, quirks, flaws, and positive points.
