Upcoming Canadian TV Anime Serial ‘Urbance’ (Dystopian World, Gender Wars)

If they were going to create a female character to give balance to the story, couldn’t she have a character beyond beyond ‘the love interest woman’?

If you honestly think she served no purpose other than to be a love interest, than you lack basic media comprehension. She is no more “reduced” to a love interest than Legolas was in this movie.

She served an important function as Captain of the Guard. With her we are given more depth and context to the current situation in Mirkwood. Her healing abilities foreshadow/reference the scene with Arwen and Frodo in LotR. Her desire to see her people not become isolationists works to further the themes and tones of the movie. Her interactions with Legolas unpin the amount of development HE will go through in LotR. 

Tauriel is given more depth, complexity, and dynamic personality traits than more than half the Dwarves in the company. To say that BECAUSE she gets a romantic subplot that she is REDUCED to a romantic subplot is a rather serious misreading.
