A few snippets of the 2 hour interview Rob Kazinsky did with EJ Scott in which he talks about Pacific Rim. (6 1/2 minutes total)

There was this one scene I had with Max Martini where we’re saying goodbye and, um, you know, I’ve been crying all day for this scene, and like, they’re real tears, you know, I was really kind of in the moment, I really felt like we’d nailed the scene, and, um, a little break happens, and we’re waiting to reset, and Guillermo kind of just walks in, saunters in, I think is the right word, with just a finger to his lips and he just leans in and he just says this one direction he just gives me this very simple note, that - and Max who heard it he just starts walking around going, “Wow, wow”, and I’m just floored by this note and it changed everything about the entire scene.

Can you say what it is?

Yeah, yeah, of course. I mean, it was, you know, my character has a dog, called Max – ironically – in the film, and the whole idea was that my father and I don’t communicate well and we communicate through the dog - you know, we talk to the dog instead of each other. And then there’s this point where I’m trying to say to him that I, you know, I love him, you know, I’m trying to say to him, “Dad, I love you” and trying and I can’t get it out so I kneel down to the dog and I start saying it to him anyway, and you know I knew what I was doing there, I was, like, I was saying I love you to the dog and I was meaning it – I was just saying it to the dog, and Guillermo comes in and he says, “When you kneel down,” he says, “imagine that you’re kneeling before your father for forgiveness for being a bad son.” And I was just like, “Holy shit.” [Laughs]

i thought they were invented to help keep people’s feet in the stirrups when riding horses

yes, this ^ They were created in Persia so that horse-riding warriors could stay in their saddles and stand up, and they traveled to Europe with the same purpose.  Later on, it was noticed that you can wear them and be instantly taller, and men and women wore them.

Chopines, the original platforms, however. were worn in the 15th and 16th centuries to life ladies above the filth of the streets.

So don’t get it twisted.
