Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz says if he had a daughter he’d ban her from following him into music stardom - to protect her from sexism in the industry. The US rocker echoed Britney Spears’s recent claims that female stars are pressured to use sex to sell their songs, saying ‘There is a double-standard for women in music.’
Entering the row over Miley Cyrus’s twerking antics, he added ‘You want to protect a girl sexuality as long as you can and let them develop on their own.’
Bandmate Patrick Stump, 29, chimed in: ‘Women have to put themselves out there so much more. My mom’s a feminist and I have discomfort with things I see female artists asked to do.
Wentz, 34, admitted he would also be reluctant to let four-year-old son Bronx do into the rock’n’roll business when he’s older. ‘In general, I wouldn’t encourage him towards that lifestyle,’ He said ‘If it was something he gravitated towards then there are many routes you can take that don’t involve just dumping your kid in Hollywood.’
While fatherhood can bring worries, the bassist and lyricist said he was enjoying the role. ‘I don’t know if more kids are my immediate but kids are awesome,’ he said. ‘Being a dad is my greatest journey.’
Wentz may not want to start changing nappies any day soon but he does see a future with his model girlfriend, Meagan Camper, 25. ‘I feel like I have a real partner in life,’ he said. His marriage to Ashlee Simpson, 29, ended in 2011. Fall Out Boy’s album Save Rock and Roll is out now. The British leg of their tour begins in Cardiff on March 15, with dates In Birmingham, Manchester, London, Newcastle and Glasgow.
