Walking Dead

SPOILERS!

So I finally got around to seeing the most recent episode of Walking Dead and I gotta say…in spite of the fan outrage…I kinda fall with Rick on this one.

Carol didn’t have to kill those two people. They where separated from everyone else. If anyone was going to be infected from them they would have already gotten infected. If they died they would have died separated from everyone. They have a council for a reason and by bypassing the system they set up she was making a decision that wasn’t hers to make alone. I feel the same about the kids (though I feel like she was doing a good thing I still think it’s the kind of thing that should have been voted/agreed upon. It certainly wasn’t grounds to kick her out but plus the dead people and those two kids they ran into tallied it up).

More then anything else it was her complete lack of empathy that made me side more firmly with Rick. I know that death is the kind of thing that you get used to but you need some tiny grounding in hope, humanity or at the very least empathy to remain human. When she went against Rick and told those two young peeps to go out and look for food it was dangerous. Rick knew they weren’t ready. Carol did too and if she did or didn’t she still didn’t care when they died or took any responsibility for that. She offered more remorse for Rick’s watch then she did for two young people who still had a surprising amount of hope and willingness to help. Two people who could have been positive for the group.

That kind of lack of empathy and care was putting other people at risk, was getting other people killed and her lack of ability to take responsibility for those actions was reason enough for Rick to ask her to go. Which she didn’t really seem to mind that much.

I think she felt like if she didn’t care for anyone or anything beyond survival that would protect her from pain but it was just destroying her and putting others at risk.

I honestly feel like at least in part he felt like he was doing right by her. He couldn’t not tell the group about what she had done because that would give her a free pass to continue doing ‘whatever she felt was right’  without consequences but by the same token she was definitely going to die if he made it public knowledge. Exile where she would likely survive was the next best thing.

I think it sucks that she’s been kicked out cause she’s one of the survivors from the start and I always admired how far she came and how strong she had become. What has happened between her and Rick and everyone has not been erased by her actions. I’ll be interested to see what happens. I hope she lives.

I wish there had been a way to get past what had happened but she would not have backed down from what she’d done and Rick would never have ignored it.

In a slightly unrelated subject I wonder how Daryl’s going to react to this? I wonder if he’s going to go after her or side with Rick. There’s more then logic at stake here. He cares about her and I don’t feel like he’d just let her walk away without comment. AMC are the bomb digs. I love that they have managed to create relatively unpredictable fantastic tv plots.
