Okay, I really think there is sexism in video games. I really do.

HOWEVER.

I take HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE issue with number six, particularly Ellie in The Last of Us.

SPOILERS BELOW

You want to know WHY she’s crying? Because the guy she’s stabbing is a rapist, implied pedophile (actually, it’s rather obvious), and cannibal, running a society of cannibals. She is fourteen. She is severely weakened by getting the shit kicked out of her by him (beating the guy is her boss battle), and she’s about to be raped before she pulls out a machete and begins to whack his face off.

Joel is her father figure. We see him break down in tears because his daughter died twenty years earlier in the game. He is a broken man and has never EVER been the same. So when he meets Ellie, he has to protect her and get her across the state in an apocalyptic wasteland so she can save humanity, because she is immune to the disease. Joel doesn’t want to because he doesn’t want to get attached. He does, and sees Ellie has an adopted daughter.

So Ellie is completely traumatized, but she hides it well. The fact that she didn’t know Joel was saving her - everyone she knows is dead, and she has survivor’s guilt because she’s immune - and she almost raped and murdered causes her to break down into tears at the sight of Joel, who she’s been traveling with for months and months and has grown attached to.

So whoEVER wrote this article thought it was sexist that a fourteen-year-old cries after a traumatizing event and seeks comfort from the ONE PERSON she feels she can trust and has been looking after since that man’s been sick with an infected injury? GOD FORBID she show some sort of emotion!

THAT’S A SEXIST VIDEO GAME PROBLEM???!?!?

See, THAT makes me doubt the person who wrote this article knew what they were talking about. They clearly didn’t play the game. Especially since that bullshit picture of the “achievement unlocked” picture with Tess and Joel. Joel had ALWAYS been a great team member with Tess, and just to choose that screenshot to make your shitty point is really deplorable to me. Not to mention the game is only for PS3, not XBox, so another fail there.

That’s my issue with this article. Just with that first entry.

I think this video game has great strong female characters, characters that go against standard gender roles and a gay character too (though it is implied it’s still cool). Bam. Some games can be sexist but as far as games go I had very little to complain about in the inequality department with this one.

by comparison to all the others i've played
