But they did the thing that annoys me. Two things, actually:
While it’s good to see an LGBT character in such a high-profile role in a major franchise, depicting a bisexual person as villainous is an unfortunate cinematic tradition, and raises the question of whether a major studio would ever depict a male protagonist of an action franchise as anything other than straight.
GLAAD, did you miss the part where they did?
I mean, I personally don’t interpret that line to mean that Bond actually identifies as bisexual (I think at most we’re looking at some “any port in the storm” times from his naval service, and maybe a villain’s boyfriend or two that needed some information seduced out of them). But how can you not see it as a big fucking deal that an icon of Western masculinity for the past 50 years just showed $1.1 billion’s worth of moviegoers that
- There’s nothing inherently threatening about having another man come on to you
- It is no big deal for a man to have sex with another man
- Masculinity and homo/bisexuality are not mutually exclusive.
I could also rant for pages about why queer villains are not automatically a step back/negative portrayal, that Silva in particular is the most sympathetic villain of the whole franchise and doesn’t even fit the “villain” label that neatly, that Skyfall plays with tropes and sexual roles all over the goddamn place, that the screenwriter who wrote that fucking scene is gay, and about a million other things, but it is late and I have work tomorrow.
