Huffington Post Religion is proud to announce that our 2012 Person Of The Year is Balpreet Kaur.

Ms. Kaur became an internet sensation when a photo of her standing in a line was taken by an editor at Reddit (a ‘Redditor) who posted it online under the subject heading ‘funny,’ apparently based on her unique appearance.

Balpreet Kaur responded to the intentional denigration by explaining who she was, why she looked the way she does, and the tenets of her Sikh faith with a remarkable generosity of spirit:

"Yes, I’m a baptized Sikh woman with facial hair. Yes, I realize that my gender is often confused and I look different than most women. However, baptized Sikhs believe in the sacredness of this body - it is a gift that has been given to us by the Divine Being [which is genderless, actually] and, must keep it intact as a submission to the divine will… When I die, no one is going to remember what I looked like, heck, my kids will forget my voice, and slowly, all physical memory will fade away," Kaur wrote. “However, my impact and legacy will remain: and, by not focusing on the physical beauty, I have time to cultivate those inner virtues and hopefully, focus my life on creating change and progress for this world in any way I can."

Rasism

Look I gotta say something right now and its probably gonna be an unpopular opinion but you know like everyone else I’m entitled to it as much as your entitled to agree or disagree with it.
I’ve never really experienced racism directed at me only directed at some of my friends and directed at others I’ve seen and its a horrible thing to see. It’s a horrible thing to know still exists in this world. When I was growing up I thought it was extinct like a long dead beast that had been driven back into the medieval shadows where it belonged. But I was wrong. Very wrong.
These days on tumblr and on the Internet it is easier to stand up for and fight for equality in many forms. It’s also easy to fall into bad habits, stereotypes and misunderstanding about what something means.
A lot of people are wondering around shouting about the fact that guys don’t know what sexism is, that white people don’t deserve to speak on racism or don’t understand it and I think that’s bullshit. I think the spirit of fighting against racism and sexism dictates that we treat all people equal and not use our fights for equality as blunt instruments to beat those we are trying to teach and change over the head.
I’m real fucking fed up with it. The world is wrong and broken but instead of trying to crucify those who aren’t actively seeking racist action we should work to find the racist dickbags who are and try to change their minds. It’s the little battles, the battles you fight for your whole lives that change the world bit by bit, step by step.

Racism is usually defined as views, practices and actions reflecting the belief that humanity is divided into distinct biological groups called races and that members of a certain race share certain attributes which make that group as a whole less desirable, more desirable, inferior, or superior.
