“I daren’t believe such a woman could care for me.” And with those words, everything just went to hell.
Really, you have to admire John Thornton’s thought processes.
* Enraged Mob: Are you going to send back those Irish workers and try to make your mill a bit less shitty?
Thornton: NEVER!
Enraged Mob: Fine, here’s a rock in your face, you dick!
* Heroine saves him from enraged mob that he manages to make more enraged by catching said rock with her head. He takes this as a declaration of love from her, and because it’s back in the days of yore, he has to go and propose to her. Or I dunno, things were weird back then.
* Heroine: Oh yeah, I totally caught that rock with my head because I didn’t want you to get ripped apart by that mob you kept pissing off. I would have done it for anyone. I would like to emphasize this: I WOULD HAVE DONE IT FOR ANYONE!
Thornton: Cool, well now that that’s over with, how’s about we get hitched?
The guy is like the Mr. Darcy of industry. I do like his family so far. His mother is harsh but seems reasonable and while his sister is annoying, it’s more from being a brat rather than malice.
