I’m a big fan of the “fuck you, Cardassians have tails now” trope to come from the DS9 crowd. Enlightened.

But why? Why the fuck do they suddenly have tails? They aren’t reptiles. No where in TNG or DS9 is it said they are reptiles or used to have tails. Or that they have tails and are chopped off for whatever reason. Why the fuck do people think they have tails or should have tails? Is it some weird ass furry crap infringing on Trek lore or what?

I mean look in terms of character design I think it actually makes sense beyond trolling. Stepping away from anthromorphising aliens in star trek is good because “human aliens everywhere” is one of the ways star trek feels less embedded in it’s universe.

i mean i could take it either way tails seem to fit with cardassian design star trek deep space nine ds9 deep space 9 garak dukat cardassian yes i am giving less credence to the whole a bunch of races came from one place thing cause i think that was a convenient canon for saving on costuming and alien design

i don’t know what the ds9 writers were going for here, but having julian flounce around, with a posh attitude, and a pipe constantly in his mouth did not read to me as umm straight.

So here’s a moment of naked honesty - I don’t know if this happens to other artists but I have like ‘good days’ and ‘bad days’ artistically. Sometimes it’s because I’m tired or distracted or emotional but other times there’s literally no reason for me to draw less than my a-game and yet I do. This doesn’t really happen with my professional work thankfully but for my personal work sometimes art brain just dun wanna come to the table.

I actually had this makeup Garak idea ages ago and tried to draw it ages ago and was just like no. I do not like what I have made here. So I redid it last night.

I’m about to post the link to Andy’s third talk at SUNY, but as I was listening to it again, I pulled out this little clip.  Turns out I might be wrong in tending to ignore, in my fanfic, the “romantic” possibilities of Garak’s forehead, mostly paying attention to the neck ridges instead. :-)
